BVD is not a reportable disease in Texas or Louisiana. BVD affects cattle and other ruminants. The great news is that BVD is not transmissible to humans. It most commonly affects cattle between 6 months and 2 years of age.

In Texas, if you have a BVDV- PI animal, you must disclose this status to a buyer, in writing, prior to or at the time of the sale. BVDV-PI is an animal with a persistent infection.

Clinical Signs in Adult cattle:

1. Fever
2. Loss of appetite
3. Drowsiness
4. Oral lesions
5. Diarrhea
6. Discharge from eye and nose

Clinical Signs in Calves:

1. shaking
2. Lack of coordination
3. wide stance
4. failure to nurse
5. birth defects
6. Abortion

**Most cases are seen in cattle 6 months to 2 years of age
