Leptospirosis

Lepto is a spiral bacteria that is transmitted to bovines most often spread by small mammals like rodents (Rats.) Transmission is through the urine of infected animals, which gets into water, soil etc where it can survive for weeks to months. The bacteria can enter the body through ingestion, inhalation or through broken skin. Humans can be infected with Lepto as well.

Common symptoms in cattle:

  1. Fever
  2. reproductive problems, with abortions/miscarriages

If you have dogs on your property too, they can develop fever, diarrhea, depression, stiffness, refusal to eat.

Humans symptoms: Flu-like, with fever, body aches, sometimes jaundice, stiff neck, vomiting, etc.

*This is another reason why you want to keep rodents out of your feed rooms and poultry coops.

There is a vaccine for cattle, pigs and dogs. Talk with your veterinarian to see if they believe this treatment is a good plan for your ranch.

Prevention:

  1. Keep areas clear of rodents
  2. Monitor your animals drinking sources
  3. Always use gloves and protective gear when cleaning up rodent feces
  4. Vaccinate your cattle and dogs from the disease.
